Nic Stone’s Dear Martin is not an easy read. But life isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s really tough, like it is for Stone’s main character, Justyce.  Although Justcye has a lot of opportunities others may not have (great school, loving mother), he also has to deal with the challenges of just being a young, African-American man growing up in a society and educational system that privileges white skin. This book takes us through Justyce’s struggles as he processes the environment in which he lives, and how he can live in this world and be true to himself.

With beauty, sorrow, grit and hope, Stone brings us on a journey with Justyce that leaves us not with all the answers, but better off for having asked the questions.
